CIVILIZATION BEYOND EARTH REDDIT SERIES
THE GREAT MISTAKEįrom its very first incarnations, the Civilization series has always been grounded in human history. Polygon spoke with four of the upcoming game's developers to learn about the game, the challenges a new venture like this poses for those creating it and how escaping Earth's gravitational pull will change the long running series.
CIVILIZATION BEYOND EARTH REDDIT PC
This fall on Linux, Mac and Windows PC for $49.99, Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth will take the strategy game beyond the confines of its home turf to an alien world that players will colonize and where they will forge a new future of humanity. It’s a fine diversion between the last and next “Civilization” game.Sid Meier's Civilization series is leaving home. Still, “Beyond Earth” is ?a deep but accessible strategy game, perfect for those daunted by “Civilization” or who prefer science fiction to historical fiction. These three directions might make play more focused, but they reduce the options and ambiguity “Civilization” is known for. With supremacy the goal is to subjugate it and its environment. With purity you hope to eliminate the native life. With harmony you try to coexist with the natives of this new planet.

There are three: purity, supremacy and harmony. “Beyond Earth” offers a few options for the make-up of your people and your leadership abilities, but the most important factor is the affinity you choose. In classic “Civilization” you choose a nation or race of people to play, and the historical record influences your strengths and weaknesses. “Beyond Earth” streamlines some of the classic game’s philosophical and diplomatic choices. Instead of nations, your mission is sponsored by private corporations. Cities look like Tomorrowland buildings instead of history museum dioramas. The “tech web,” which lets you unlock new disciplines and technologies through scientific experimentation, replaces the classic “Civilization” building blocks with plausible science fiction technology.

Returning fans will look forward to seeing how “Beyond Earth” adapts various longtime aspects of “Civilization.” Random barbarian tribes are replaced by extraterrestrials. You can engage with them peacefully and try to cooperate on this unknown planet, or fight them for land and resources. The interactions are very similar: You’ll guide your unit over a map broken into hexagonal spaces, exploring this new alien territory while creating settlements and eventually meeting up with other refugees from Earth. “Beyond Earth” greatly resembles “Civilization V,” the latest game in the main series, but with a futuristic redesign. “Civilization” is historical fiction born out of anthropology and philosophy “Beyond Earth” is hard science fiction that doesn’t skimp on the science. The new spinoff, “Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth,” picks up at that juncture, expanding the game’s horizon past our own planet while tightening its focus on what comes next for humanity. Its conclusion is straight out of our earliest aspirations: If you don’t die first, a game of “Civilization” ends when mankind finally unshackles itself from Earth and launches a mission into space. It’s about the biggest possible picture, the entire history of human civilization summed up in 20 hours and a single save slot. ‘Civilization” isn’t a game about moments.
